When to train? Research

In 2016, researchers from Finland conducted a scientific experiment on a group of 42 men, which they divided into two teams. Scientists wanted to investigate whether the time of training has an impact on the development of strength and muscle mass. The control group A performed the training early in the morning, between 6.30 am and 10.00 am, and group B, in the afternoon, between 4.00 pm and 8.00 pm. As it turned out, the evening team achieved better results, especially in terms of muscle tissue growth.

Another study from 2012 partially explains why control group B performed better by training in exactly the same way, but at a different time. Milan Sedliak and colleagues wanted to test the effect of exercise time on the phosphorylation of proteins that regulate muscle tissue hypertrophy and metabolism. After the end of the study, a muscle biopsy was performed in the control groups, after which it was found that some of the anabolic signals were higher in those training in the late afternoon, which eventually translated into the development of muscle mass.
